Henley on Thames, un bellissimo weekend fuoriporta

Ogni tanto é bello fuggire da Londra anche solo per un weekend ed esplorarne i dintorni.

Per Natale avevano regalato a me e Phillip una degustazione di vini in una cantina non molto distante da Londra, a Henley on thames, cosí ne abbiamo approfittato per un paio di giorni lontano dal caos di Londra.

Le campagne inglesi sono spettacolari, io ho avuto la fortuna di girare un po’ in UK e devo dire che ogni volta rimango incantata dalla bellezza dei paesaggi che ci sono attorno a Londra, ma non solo.

Forse per molti diró una bestialitá

ma Londra é la millesima parte del Regno Unito e forse neanche la parte piú bella (e credetemi, io amo Londra!), ma I paesini che si possono trovare anche solo ad un’oretta di macchina, come nel nostro caso, vi faranno rimanere a bocca aperta, se mai avrete l’occasione di andarci.

Il tour alla Chiltern Valley winery a Henley on Thames é stato molto interessante,

e il posto in sé é assolutamente meraviglioso, tanto da averne fatta anche una location per matrimoni.

Durante la degustazione abbiamo assaggiato 4 vini, 4 birre diverse e 3 liquori.

Le birre devo dire la veritá non mi sono piaciute per niente in quanto molto amare, mentre per I vini ed I liquori é stato amore a prima vista, soprattutto per il liquore alle arance rosse di Sicilia, una vera delizia.

Altro particolare che mi ha fatto piacere conoscere, é che la machina che usano per imbottigliare sia vini che birre é ITALIANA! Mi sono sentita molto molto orgogliosa!

Durante la degustazione ci hanno anche offerto un assaggio di due formaggi molto particolari, tra cui quello che é entrato di diritto nella classifica dei 5 miei formaggi preferiti: il Red Leicester. Cremoso quanto basta, con un gusto assolutamente non troppo forte, piacevolissimo da mangiare anche cosi, da solo. Ovviamente non ho potuto non comprarne 2 immediatamente! Lo sto conservando molto gelosamente in frigo cercando di non farlo finire subito 😀

Dopo la visita alla vigna abbiamo preso un taxi e siamo andati a pranzo nella carinissima Henley on thames. Qui ogni anno in luglio si svolge una regata che é molto famosa nel Regno Unito, la Henley Royal Regata, e si possono vedere tante donne con i classici capellini strani (dev’essere una cosa piuttosto posh…).

Non potevamo ovviamente farci mancare di bere una birra in uno dei pub piú belli, “the Angel on the bridge”, che ha un patio a ridosso del fiume e si possono vedere un sacco di paperelle e cigni!

Per la notte abbiamo soggiornato in un pub che é anche B&B, il “The frog at Skirmett“, con un ottimo ristorante in cui abbiamo mangiato benissimo!

L’unica cosa che devo assolutamente segnalarvi é di dimenticarvi della wi-fi e anche del segnale telefonico, qui siamo davvero nel nulla e anche se la wi-fi dicono che c’é, é praticamente inesistente. Altra nota, se programmate di arrivare tra le 3 e le 6 di pomeriggio assicuratevi di prendere accordi per farvi aprire perché il pub é chiuso e noi ovviamente, arrivati alle 4, abbiamo dovuto aspettare in macchina fino alle 6 che il pub aprisse.

Sometimes it’s nice to escape from London even just for a weekend and explore the neighbourhoods.

For Christmas, me and Phillip, we got a Virgin voucher for a wine tasting experience in a wine yard not far from London, the “Chiltern Valley winery & brewery“, so we took advantage of it to spend a couple of days away from the London chaos.

The English countryside is spectacular, I had the fortune to see a bit of it and I must say that every time, I am enchanted by the beauty of the landscapes around London, but not only.

Perhaps for many I will say something really weird, but London is the thousandth part of the United Kingdom and perhaps not even the most beautiful part (and believe me, I love London!), but the villages that can be found even just an hour’s drive away, like in our case, they leave you speechless, if you ever have the opportunity please go visit them too.

During the wine tasting, we tasted a total of 4 wines, 4 different beers and 3 liqueurs.

The beers, I must say, I did not like them at all because they were very bitter, while for wines and liqueurs it was love at first sight, especially for the Sicilian red orange liqueur, a real delight.

Another detail that I was pleased to meet, is that the machine they use to bottle both wines and beers was manufactured in Italy! I felt very proud!

During the tasting, they also offered a bite of two very special kinds of cheese, including the one that came right into the top five of my favourite cheeses: a vintage Red Leicester.

Creamy enough, with a taste that is absolutely not too strong, very pleasant to eat even by itself. Obviously, I could not stop myself buy 2 of them immediately! I’m keeping it very jealously in the fridge trying not to end it in one week : D

After visiting the vineyard we took a taxi and went to lunch in the lovely Henley on Thames. Here, every year in July there is a regatta that is very famous in the United Kingdom, the Henley Royal Regatta, and you can see many women with the classic weird hats (it must be something rather posh …).

We obviously couldn’t let ourselves go back to the B&B without drinking a beer in one of the most beautiful pubs of Henley, “the Angel on the bridge“, which has a patio near the river and you can see a lot of ducks and swans swimming next to you!

For the night we stayed in a pub that is also a B&B, “The frog at Skirmett” with a great restaurant where we ate very well!

The only thing I absolutely have to tell you is to forget about the wi-fi and even the telephone signal, here we are really in the middle of nothing and even if they say they have wi-fi…it is practically non-existent.

Another note, if you plan to arrive between 3 pm and 6 pm be sure to make arrangements to have your room open because the pub is closed during that time and as we arrived at 4, we had to wait in the car until 6 pm for the pub to open (we couldn’t drive anywhere as we drunk alcohol since morning!), so that was a bit annoying but, overall, a very nice place.
